David's Story
The 2 years at AFA, I spent Pine Beach were, on reflection, a great experience in all respects for self discipline, self confidence, et cetera... a very positive part of my early life and development. Following graduation in '55, I attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick,NJ, graduating in '59 with a B.A in Economics. I then joined the U. S. Navy, graduated from Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island as an Ensign and spent three years on acive duty - most of it sea duty, with 1 1/2 years in "WestPac" and the Philippines. Released from active duty as a Lieutenant, Senior Grade, then spent 2 more years in the active Naval Reserve until exensive business travel forced me to resign, "reluctantly" - I might add. In those 3 years of active duty, I never had a bad day in the Navy.. Every day was interesting, positive, and educational for future life. I am very glad to have served my country and attribute my experiences at AFA as the factor in my liking my Naval service. I have since always been in the commercial real estate field as a broke...Expand for more
r,leasing and selling office and industrial space, in Chicago, Columbus, OH., New York City, and New Jersey. During part of that period, 20 years, I worked for Cross & Brown Company in Manhattan, an affiliate of Metropolitan Life, part of which time I was an EVP of the company... Entering my 73rd year, I am still actively working in this field and have no interest in retiring. 3 grown children 2 granddaughters, Married twice - second marriage entering its 20 year. Wife (17 years younger than I) is President of a division of a large ladies wear company...I recenty took a look at the former Pine Beach campus and was saddened to have seen it. I served for many years actively on the AFA Alumni Board there, and through the school's closing. I was very disheartened with the self serving and deplorable reasons the then Board of Dirctors (most of them, Ocean County big noise - would be big shots) had in letting the Academy (AFA-North)situation deteriorate instead of addressing it in a constructive way. It could have been saved... Regards, David D. MacDowell
